I’m a Nebraska based wedding photographer that craves those timeless and intimate moments. With over two years of experience and shooting over 50 weddings, you can trust I’ll never miss a moment. When I’m not capturing life’s most cherished memories you can usually find me spending time with my husband and son, tending to one of my many houseplants, or sipping an iced latte. I’m here to give you something that’ll bring you right back to the second in which it was captured.
Planning the perfect engagement session isn’t always easy. There are so many different things to take into consideration: Who should take our photos? When should we schedule it? Where should it be? What in the heck should we wear?! All of these are great questions to think about when it’s time to schedule your session. Keep reading to answer all of these questions plus a little bonus on how to make your engagement session personal!
Finding a photographer that helps you celebrate this milestone in your life in a unique way can be stressful and take time. It’s important to find a photographer who’s work and personality you love. Many photographers will include an engagement session in their wedding packages to get to know you before your wedding day. This is a great thing to look for when finding your engagement photographer so you know what to expect on your big day!
There are two things to take into consideration when planning when you should have your engagement session. How soon would you like to have photos and is there a certain time during the year that you both absolutely love? I truthfully don’t believe there is a bad time for engagement photos as long as you make the most of it!
If you’re getting married within the next six months it’s safe to say you probably want to schedule your engagement session as soon as possible. Many couples use their engagement photos to send save the dates or to create a wedding photo guest book.
If time isn’t of the essence then you should choose a season you both love. Spring is perfect for lots of greenery and soft colors. Summer is great for anything on the water and late evenings. If you love orange and red leaves, tall prairie grass, and bonfires, then fall is your go-to. Lastly, winter is perfect if you love the snow and everything Christmas!
When choosing the location(s) for your engagement session it’s important to think of your overall vibe. Do you and your Fiancé enjoy spending time in the city or out in nature? Do you want your engagement session to be more specific and include locations such as your home, a coffee shop, or even a greenhouse? Are the two of you adventurous and want to have a destination engagement session? Spend time thinking about places you love to go with your partner and try to incorporate those into your session!
One of the most asked questions I get from my couples is “what should we wear?” I created an Outfit Planning Guide specifically for my couples to walk them through choosing the perfect outfits for their engagement session. Here are a few key points to consider.
You and your Fiancé should wear clothes that make you feel the most comfortable and allow for movement. The more comfortable you are, the easier it will be to focus on your engagement session and have fun!
The colors you choose for your outfits can be used to compliment your surroundings and match the vibe of your session. A neutral color palette is always a great place to start when choosing outfits, especially if your location is outdoors.
Most photographers will allow more than one outfit for your engagement session. I recommend my couples bring at least one casual outfit and one dressy outfit to give them variety and contrast in their gallery.
Your engagement session is the perfect time to treat yourself to a few new outfits. Make sure you give yourself enough time to order or try on clothes from different stores to find something that compliments you! If you’re not sure what you’ve chosen will work, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask your photographer!
Engagement photos can be extra special if you make your session more of a personal experience. After all, this is your engagement session and it should be about you and your Fiancé! So how do you make it an experience? Here are a few ways to add a personal touch to your session.
